Dialectical Behaviour Therapy

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) is best employed with those clients who have more severe difficulties. Although Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) has commonly been the Gold Standard in the UK, DBT has proved effective with those client groups when CBT has failed. Our argument here at Home Counties Therapeutic Consultancy is that we prefer to offer DBT as a first choice rather than failing clients and then changing treatment strategies.

DBT combines skills training with individual therapy

Who is it for?

We run 3 DBT groups that are aimed at different treatment needs

  1. Adult drug and alcohol.
  2. Adolescent drug and alcohol.
  3. Adolescent behavioural and emotional.

DBT is a 26 week module course during which time the client works on all five skill based areas in a group setting and works on individual issues with their designated therapist. Both components are necessary as clients become able to apply new skills in real life. It is highly recommended that clients complete the module twice. This is due to the fact that learning to apply the skills during the first six months takes considerable effort and the second six month period is where learning is compounded and becomes more integrated with the clients life and thinking style.

Each client takes part in a 2½ hour small group session each week and has a one hour session with a DBT therapist each week.
